The Hereford Mappa Mundi dates from around 1290. It was made in a time when the population was largely uneducated and provincial.
It provided an insight into the world beyond their borders; a world of classical legends and faraway lands. In this map the people could revel in a pictorial description of the outside world, a world they may never see but one within which they were very much a part.
This is a copy of a fascinating map; a map which is as much a work of cosmology as cartography.
